I'm Outside of Your Window With My Radio

“A phase has never lasted 20 years, I am a full-fledged fucking adult and I’m never going to fucking change,” JT Woodruff of Hawthorne Heights addressing the crowd at Is For Lovers Festival. The crowd - mostly people in my age range of late 20’s to late 30’s - laughed and cheered through as JT spoke, especially when he joked about the lack of cell service made it more authentically 2003.

JT also talked about how amazing it is to still be here after all this time, playing shows to this generation that were there for that magic that was the early 2000’s scene. “This happiness is all we’ve been chasing,” said JT as HH closed out their set.

The way some people get energized by a day at the beach, or a hike in the woods, I get my spark from going to shows. I left the festival feeling extra motivated after seeing so many musicians and creatives in one place.

Is For Lovers Fest made its way to California this past weekend and I was there to take it all in. Hosted by Hawthorne Heights, this mini fest was just the right size to see multiple bands in one day without needing to put in as much effort as larger fests tend to require. The two stages were set about a football field’s length apart, making it easy for the crowd to mass migrate every half hour as the stages traded off sets.

What an awesome day! I saw Touché Amore, Norma Jean, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Hawthorne Heights, Thursday, and Thrice. It was a pretty good mix of bands I’ve seen recently and bands I haven’t seen in ten years or longer. Hopefully this fest becomes an annual thing, it was the right amount of bands in a beautiful location to make it a memorable day.

DIARY ENTRY

Last fall I visited the Eternal Silence monument at Chicago’s Graceland Cemetery. It’s said that when someone look into the eyes of the statue, they’re supposed to see a vision of their death.
