All Hail the Superb Owl

Petition for a Beyonce rock album

It’s been a while since a rock band has played the Super Bowl halftime show. So… possibilities for a Warped Tour style halftime show? I think the most likely options include Blink-182, Green Day, and Fall Out Boy. I’d love to see some big pop-punk collab happen that brings in a bunch of artists in.

Let’s bring rock music back to the Super Bowl!

Okay and while we’re at it, Beyonce is dropping a country album… how do we kindly ask her to make a punk album next? 🤔

IT’S NOT A PHASE

Things found on the interwebz this week:

  • The Decemberists released their first new song since 2018 and announced a tour! → Spotify

  • The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame 2024 shortlist was announced - Sinéad O’Connor and Oasis are among the nominees for this year’s inductee class → Pitchfork

  • Yellowcard just released a collab album with Hammock - the result is a low-fi, atmospheric remix of some of their past discography. → Spotify

FROM THE PIT

Thursday is celebrating 20 years of the album “War All The Time” and I was lucky enough to get a front row spot for their show at The Observatory in Santa Ana. I’d seen Thursday’s “Full Collapse” anniversary setlist a LOT in the last two years, probably 10+ times. So it was a delight to see them do a play through of a different album.

War All The Time” is one of the albums that contributed to my political awakening when I was a teenager. For the band, they just took what was already great about “Full Collapse” and somehow made it even better. This album is def on the Mount Rushmore of post-hardcore albums.

Getting to scream along to this album in a sold out room of 1,200 people was well worth the sore neck I woke up with the next morning after all the head banging.

After the Thursday set ended, I hauled it over to see Emo After Dark’s last set of the night in Long Beach.

I can’t think of a better way to cap off the night than making in time for an hour-long set that included covers of Thrice, Hawthorne Heights, Linkin Park, Underoath!

NOSTALGIA BLAST

Jawbreaker’s “24 Hour Revenge Therapy” celebrated its 30th anniversary this week. This album is everything the post-grunge 1990’s punk scene was - with choruses like “We're too smart to watch TV / We're too dumb to make believe / This is all we want from life” that make a bleeding heart the soul of the album.

DIARY ENTRY

A poem about getting older and isolating myself to chase after dreams/projects.

Bonus song to listen to this week - my birthday is Feb 15th so this is my official birthday anthem - its always the first thing I listen to when I wake up on my birthday.
