Talent vs Skill

New website for all things Emo Newsletter

I started putting together a website this week! I needed a tidy landing page for all everything going on with this project - check it out here: laemowriter.com

In the last several years, there’s some language I’ve been conscious of phasing out of use. I don’t say words like crazy or insane or stupid anymore. And for the creative field, I’ve started changing how I use the word talent.

As I started writing my show review below, I intentionally use the word skilled in place where most people would casually say talented. To me these are two different things. Natural talent can only take a person so far - its how that talent is developed and nurtured with lots of repetition that it evolves into true skill.

I’ve been told since a young age that I’m a good writer, that I have a talent for it. And generally I agree, I can say that I have a talent for writing. I don’t dare to call myself a skilled writer, though, as there’s been very large gaps of time where I have not actively worked to cultivate and level up my abilities. I’m working on that. I hope I can comfortably call myself a skilled writer someday. Until then, I have plenty of reading and practice to do.

Next week I’ll have a book review up along with a couple show recaps. See you then!

IT’S NOT A PHASE

Things found on the interwebz this week - lots of new music:

  • Listen to The Hives new album - they’re BACK baby. → Spotify

  • I adore The Linda Lindas, their new song almost gives me horror-punk vibes → Spotify

  • An album I’ve talked about before, ‘Burn Piano Island Burn’ from The Blood Brothers is getting a 20th anniversary vinyl reissue → BrooklynVegan

FROM THE PIT

On Friday I drove down to Garden Amp to see L.S. Dunes for the second time within a week! For this recap I’m focusing on the openers for the show. It was a last minute surprise that Kayleigh Goldsworthy showed up for a quick set. Although she usually performs with a full band, I think Kayleigh shines with just herself and a guitar in front of a mic. It takes a lot of skill to keep an audience captivated without anyone else on stage of backup.

Before this tour I only knew the song “I’m gonna tell my therapist on you” from Pinkshift. Watching their set, I could really feel that they play from the heart and I saw that energy carry over to the crowd. I’m glad I got to see them twice now because of the Dunes tour!

Its refreshing to see a queer BIPOC punk band out there crushing it and rising up the ranks. I hope Pinkshift along with bands like Meet Me @ The Altar and Magnolia Park continue thrive and push the status quo.

DIARY ENTRY

I had the 1931 Frankenstein film on as background noise while putting together this week’s newsletter, so this is the result. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
