Returning to my Myspace poetry era

I think I’ve finally tapped out my wider social network - there’s now over 650 of y’all subscribed to this newsletter! What the actual eff. 🤯

Can y’all do me a favor? If you’re enjoying this email - please help spread the word and forward it to a friend!

This past weekend, I had every intention of opening up my word doc and start hacking away at the keyboard. My need to sleep won out, and I spent most of my scheduled writing time on naps. But that’s okay! I need a solid day off every once in a while, with absolutely no need to get off the couch. Those days are rare. As I’m still trying to figure out a steady writing schedule, I’m starting to eyeball the NaNoWriMo daily word count calendars and wondering if I need to start a word count challenge to kick my ass into gear.

I did manage to squeeze out a poem this week, my first in yeeears. It’s later in this email, please be gentle while reading. The last time I put my shitty poetry up on the internet for people to read, it was on Myspace.

Anyone else need to keep motivated to do A Thing? Drop a reply and let’s yell at each other about accountability.

This week I’ve been listening to a lot of Spanish Love SongsSpotify

IT’S NOT A PHASE

Things found on the interwebz this week:

  • Designer Disguise’s cover of Hilary Duff is the best thing I got DM’d this week → Instagram

  • Explosions in the Sky announced their first new album since 2016, and now I’m thinking about booking a flight to see their tour roll through Texas → Pitchfork

  • GWAR did an NPR Tiny Desk concert and it was exactly as ridiculous and awesome as it sounds → YouTube

FROM THE PIT

I had a night out at the Whisky A Go Go over the weekend, for a show headlined by Forever Sevenfold and Sweet Revenge - tributes to Avenged Sevenfold and My Chemical Romance respectively.

The musicianship level of the material being covered by both bands was high, ranging from the riffs of “Thank You For The Venom” to “Nightmare.” None of that shit is easy, and both bands pull it off.

I love a good cover band night, its a fun way to jam to some favorite songs with a group of people who also enjoy the same thing. The crowd was there to sing along and rock out, fueling an energy that carried the show well past midnight.

NOSTALGIA BLAST

So many great albums are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year. I gotta include The Blood BrothersBurn Piano Island, Burn as one of those genre-defying albums that pushed boundaries. 20 years later and it is still an experimental, aggressive, punch in the face that never fails to get me hyped.
