Happy Campers at the Piano-Rock Show

NaNoWriMo beat me up in the parking lot

Because I’m really terrible at stopping myself from juggling multiple projects at once, I spent the last week designing a customized calendar! It’s TikTok’s fault - I got served a video from a fan made Taylor Swift themed lyric calendar, and I thought to myself “I need one for My Chemical Romance” and hours later I was googling vendors and had a project file started. I’m waiting for the proof so I can see what it looks like, and then I’ll have a small batch available for sale.

All this to say that I’m miserably behind on my NaNoWriMo word count! I look at my word count versus the late nights I’ve been attempting to get some writing done and it feels like NaNoWriMo shoved me out behind the school parking lot and stole my lunch money.

I’ve got some travel coming up to visit my family for Thanksgiving - hopefully on those plane rides I’ll be able to get some uninterrupted time to work on my word count. For those of you participating in NaNoWriMo - how has your Week 1 progress been? Hopefully better than mine!

And since Halloween sadly passed with no news from My Chemical Romance, I’ll just have my new calendar and my word doc to keep me company for the foreseeable future.

IT’S NOT A PHASE

Things found on the interwebz this week:

  • Foxing released a 10-year anniversary edition of “The Albatross” → Spotify

  • Paramore’s Hayley Williams interviewed Dolly Parton - and if you read anything from this week’s email, this interview is THE THING TO READ. → Consequence of Sound

FROM THE PIT

On Sunday night Andrew McMahon turned the Wiltern into a summer campground! Andrew’s tours always have a little defining twist that keeps the shows unique from one another over the years - my favorite is still from 2018 when the set played out like an episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

This tour’s stage setup was truly camp - taps was played on the trumpet to open the show, the stage manager wore a park ranger outfit, there was a tent on stage, and the night ended with marshmallows being tossed toward the audience!

Oddly enough, when an artist I love to see perform puts out new music - it becomes an uphill battle for me to really enjoy those songs in the live setting. Andrew’s catalogue has so many of my favorite songs, that when one gets bumped from the setlist in favor of a new song, it better be a damn good song! From this show, two of the newer songs won me over and I hope they become setlist staples moving forward. The first being the song that opened the night - “Nobody Tells You When You’re Young” and then one of the encore tracks “New Friends” - both reflections of life’s journey.

NOSTALGIA BLAST

“Waking the Fallen” by Avenged Sevenfold celebrated its 20 year anniversary a few months ago. Guitarists Zacky Vengance and Synyster Gates are like the Slash and Eddie Van Halen of the 2000’s metal scene. This album, along with “City of Evil” is where I learned that guitars are fucking sexy.
